Part 87: Gumbo Village 1

I can't think of any single instance where the move and magic block spells might be useful.

Hey, they are super useful*!

I can think of.... exactly one place where magic block would be helpful, and I'm pretty sure everyone's immune to it there. But that's a ways off.

Welcome back!

Let's open up with a long sweeping shot all around the town.

Frog statues.

Seriously, frogs are kind of a Thing in Gumbo.

Before we start that, though....

Metal Frogs give resistance to magic and move block. They can be dropped by enemies in Typhoon Tower, if you get lucky.
The spectacles provide resistance to "critical". Not quite sure what that means. Might reduce IP knockback? I'll have to science it at some point.
Raincoats provide +7 sleep resistance, which equals an immunity. Would've been fucking helpful back when we were fighting Mio, that's for sure.
Vaccines, Panaceas, and dynamite we've already seen.
Coconuts are just Healthweeds, only more expensive. Same 80 HP heal. Holy Fire is just a grenade that does extra damage to ghosts.

For 1600 gold, a Blizzard Scroll is an excellent oh shit button. The Gale Scroll is a single-target attack at 120 damage.
The Lightning scroll there....

Yep. Less damage, and more than twice as expensive as the Zap! Scrolls back in Luc.
Items are a bust. Let's see what weapon's they've got in stock.

The Azure Knife is water-elemental and only has +1 attack over the Gust Knife we've got now. The rainstaves would be a decent upgrade for Justin and Sue, but enemies in the next dungeon drop them pretty frequently, so I'll hold off on buying them.
Now that I've said that, watch me get exactly zero.
Pictured, the frog axe is... it's an axe. No bells or whistles.
Anyway, we pick up Feena's new knife. Let's hope there's something worth our time in the armor shop.

Ooooooh yes. The Dragon Vest's +2 fire resist is nice, especially since it stacks with the Fire Charm's +4, making the wearer almost completely immune to fire. The girls pick up this, even though Feena loses some defense from it.
The Frog Shirt is worse in every way. Only +10 defense, and gives +1 against water.

The MagicMirror Shield here is interesting. If you get hit by a normal attack while you have this equipped, a small fraction of the damage is reflected back onto the attacker.
The Stone Head has the Paperweight effect of preventing you from falling when attacked. Only Justin and Gadwin can equip it, though, so we pass, bringing us to the Mach Boot.

If you've been holding off on upgrading your footwear because you don't want to eat the Move penalty, the Mach Boot is your first real chance to do so.

Feena finally swaps out of the boots she started with, and Sue replaces the Dragon Boots she stole from Gadwin.
Technically, Justin could upgrade here, but eh. I've already got him equipped with a proper weapon and accessory. Don't wanna make things too easy on me.
Unfortunately, after the Mach Boots and Dragon Vests, I only had enough money for one MagicMirror Shield.
Naturally, given that Sue's whole thing is being invincible, she gets it.
And with the shopping done, let's explore the town.

Aw crap, I was going for a no-alerts run, too.

And with that, she runs off.
... Okay, technically she sashays off, but I'm pretty sure that's just because generic NPCs don't have running animations.

Oh, great, he's a Redditor.

And just like the woman, he casually strolls off at full speed.

Hmm. Troubling. We should clearly go talk to just the NPCs that can help us with our boat issue and ignore everyone else.

Got it, Danda is some sort of sailing prodigy.

Okay, you have a face portrait. I'm going to assume that you're Danda.

Dammit, Danda.
Guess we'll be solving this mystery next time, gang.
